Ok, so now that you know a little bit about the Mayan calendar (see previous posts), it’s time to find your birth date! This involves a little math, but stick it out, it’s worth it.

The first thing to do is to figure out the day you were born on the Gregorian Calendar. Now there are several ways to do this. You could 1) Ask your parents, 2)Look at your birth certificate, or 3) Figure out how old you are now, and count backwards. Let’s use April 11, 1999 as an example.

But really, the first thing to do is to figure out exactly how many days have passed before you were born. Use the following table to convert April 11th to a decimal fraction of a year.

So April 11, 1999 = 1999.2738 years

Divide this date into centuries (1900) plus the nearest whole number of days.

1999.2738 = 1900 + 99.2738 years = 1900 years + (99.2738 yrs x 365.2422 days/yr) = 1900 years + 36, 259 days.

Use the following table to convert the century into days.

1900 years = 2,415,032 days. So April 11, 1999 = 2,415,032 + 36,259 = 2,451,291 days. Finally, because the Mayan calendar didn’t start the same day as the Gregorian, we have to subtract a correlation number (584,283) from our total to make the two calendars equal. So 2,451,291 – 584,283= 1,867,008 So now we know how many days passed before April 11, 1999.

Now use your prior knowledge of how to convert a date to Mayan Long Count to convert our new number of days into Long Count. 1,867,008 = 12.19.6.2.8 Congratulations! You have the first part of your birthday!

The next step is to find the Calendar Round for the Long Count date. To find the Tzolkin date, take the number of days, 1,867,008, and divide by 260 (the number of days in the Tzolkin calendar). This will give you how many cycles have passed. But what we want is what day in the cycle you were born on, we don’t care how many times the calendar has gone round. The remainder is an important number. Multiply by 260 to find the number of days and count forward from 4 Ahau (the day of creation).

1,867,008/260 = 7180.8

.8 x 260 = 208

So count 208 days forward from 4 Ahau.

208 days from 4 Ahau is 4 Lamat. There’s only one more thing to do!

To calculate the Haab date, divide 1,867,008 by 365. Again, we want to see how many days are left over.

1,867,008/365 = 5115.0904

.0904 x 365 = 33

And we count forward from the day of creation 8 Cumhu.

33 days from 8 Cumhu is 16 Pop.

Sooo, April 11, 1999 is 12.19.6.2.8 4 Lamat 16 Pop. How cool is that? Now go back to the pervious posts and figure out how to draw your birthday in Mayan hieroglyphs.

My birthday is 12.18.13.5.13 4 Ben 6 Mol. Can you do it backwards and figure out the Gregorian date?
